A smart highway is being prepared to also make drivers smarter on the recently frustrating M1.
Hungarian drivers will face challenges on the M1 highway for years, but plans for a modern, intelligent road are set for completion in three years. This upgraded highway will feature six lanes and an additional smart lane for dynamic traffic management. Since last summer, Hungary hosts one of the world's smartest highway sections, a pilot project on the M1-M7 route, which has been enhanced to over 800 meters. Equipped with radar, lidar, thermal cameras, and optical cameras, this system uses AI to monitor traffic in real-time. Developed by Magyar Közút and BME as part of an EU project, it aims to lay the groundwork for broader intelligent traffic management infrastructure.
