The deadline is approaching: tens of thousands need to replace their old, book-format ID cards
Viktória Lőrincz, the Minister of Rural and Settlement Development, emphasized the urgency of replacing old book-format identification cards before their expiration on December 31. The Digital Hungary Agency announced that the replacement process can be initiated at any government office without prior appointment. Individuals must present their old ID and residence card. Although these IDs lost validity on August 3 due to EU regulations, a legislative amendment allows their use until the end of the year for specific purposes, such as pension collection. Starting January 1, 2027, these old documents will no longer be valid in any situation.
