The commander of the Serbian anti-terrorism units has been arrested
Igor Žmirić, the commander of Serbia's anti-terrorism unit, was arrested on Thursday following an order from the Belgrade prosecutor's office. He is among five individuals detained during a large-scale operation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Alongside Žmirić, four current and former members of the personal and object protection unit were also arrested. They were involved in an incident at the Faculty of Law in July and August 2025, where several students were injured and detained, with police allegedly violating university autonomy. Following Žmirić's arrest, the Ministry announced that nine police officers were placed in 48-hour detention on charges of assault and torture related to an incident involving student Nikolina Sinđelić. This marks another arrest of a state law enforcement leader in Serbia shortly after the elections.
