The European People's Party would close the Article 7 procedure against Hungary

The European People's Party (EPP) has called for the closure of the Article 7 procedure against Hungary, citing reforms by the new government after the April elections. Following a fact-finding visit, the EPP delegation assessed progress in democratic reforms and the rule of law. EPP Vice-President Tomas Tobé emphasized that Hungarian voters indicated a desire for a new beginning, which should be reflected in EU policies. The Article 7 procedure was initiated eight years ago due to concerns about democracy and rule of law in Hungary. However, the EPP clarified that closing the procedure would not automatically absolve Hungary, as the consequences of previous institutional declines cannot be resolved quickly. The focus should shift to monitoring ongoing reforms.
