Lyon confirms Paulo Fonseca at Sporting

Paulo Fonseca has been appointed as the new head coach of Sporting, replacing Rui Borges. Lyon confirmed that Fonseca expressed his desire to leave, leading to a €5 million compensation for his early contract termination. Fonseca returns to Portuguese football after a decade, having previously managed clubs like Shakhtar Donetsk and Roma. He takes over a Sporting team currently in third place in the Primeira Liga, nine points behind leaders FC Porto. Jorge Maciel, Fonseca's assistant, will temporarily lead the team until the next international break. Fonseca's coaching career includes significant achievements in Ukraine and Italy, and he previously won the Taça de Portugal with Braga before moving abroad.
