More than 450 migrants arrive in a day in the Canary Islands
Over 450 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, including 143 rescued from an overcrowded inflatable boat, marking a record for this migration route. The Spanish Maritime Rescue saved these individuals about 50 miles from Lanzarote, with the Guardamar Polimnia transporting them to Arrecife. Since summer, there has been a rise in boats carrying over a hundred occupants, with nearly 5,000 migrants reaching the Canaries since early November. In response to the influx, the El Hierro government declared a social emergency due to pressure on public services.
