Marlaska urges Senegal to strengthen migration management in light of the increase in arrivals in the Canary Islands

The Spanish Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, urged Senegal to enhance migration management as arrivals to the Canary Islands surge. In early November, over 4,000 migrants arrived, following a significant increase in October. Grande-Marlaska met with Senegalese officials, emphasizing the need for joint solutions to prevent dangerous maritime crossings. He acknowledged Senegal's effective border control efforts, which intercepted over 4,000 migrants in 2026. Spain is providing €500,000 to Senegal's National Navy for navigation equipment and has deployed Spanish police to assist in migration control. The minister also visited the Youth Olympic Games coordination committee, highlighting Spain's support in training Senegalese security forces.
