The transformation of the National Cultural Fund has begun
The Hungarian government has approved a legislative amendment to restructure the National Cultural Fund (NKA), removing the special decision-making powers of the Hungarian Academy of Arts (MMA) and enhancing the role of cultural professional organizations. This change is the first step towards a comprehensive reform planned for 2027, aimed at restoring the NKA's credibility and democratizing the cultural support system. The amendment reinstates principles from before 2016, eliminating MMA's privileged role in funding decisions. The new rules will take effect on January 1, 2027, as part of ongoing efforts to renew the cultural support system. The NKA's vice president, Mattyasovszky-Zsolnay Bence, was appointed amid ongoing investigations into the organization, and significant funding decisions have already been made to support various cultural initiatives.
