The government is shutting down the Food Rescue Center, which has been unable to do anything for four years.

The Hungarian government has decided to dissolve the Food Rescue Center due to serious deficiencies identified by the State Audit Office. Despite spending billions on the nonprofit organization, it failed to fulfill its legally mandated food rescue tasks since its establishment in 2022. The audit revealed that 2.8 billion HUF was spent on an IT system that could not be justified, alongside another 4.6 billion HUF for its operation. The center was created to redistribute near-expiry food from the state, but issues were evident from the start, including delays in software development and lack of transparency in operations. The Minister of Agriculture stated that this decision does not mean the government will abandon food rescue efforts.
