Billions of euros for CO2 storage, but success is not yet guaranteed
The Dutch government is investing an additional 1.3 billion euros in CO2 capture and storage projects to meet climate goals. The Porthos project in Rotterdam is set to begin next year, aiming to capture 2.5 megatons of CO2 annually. However, technical delays and a lack of enthusiasm from companies pose challenges. The larger Aramis project, which requires significant investment, is also struggling to attract participants due to uncertain returns and low carbon pricing. Companies find it cheaper to pollute than to invest in CO2 capture, complicating the transition to sustainable practices.
