They thought they found an old rocket. Astronomers confirmed a new mini-moon

A small asteroid, designated 2026 QQ8, has temporarily become Earth's second moon after being captured by its gravity. Discovered by astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky in August, it is estimated to be 1-2 meters in diameter and will remain in Earth's orbit until the end of the year before continuing its journey around the Sun. Similar temporary moons, or "mini-moons," have been observed before, with the possibility of Earth hosting multiple such objects at once. The asteroid poses no threat to Earth due to its small size.
