Exactly 25 years later, the bankruptcy of Sabena is still not settled: "Next year we can really close it"
After 25 years, the bankruptcy proceedings of Sabena, Belgium's largest bankruptcy, are still ongoing. Curator Christian Van Buggenhout anticipates closure next year. He opted for a long-term strategy, selling assets at higher values rather than liquidating immediately. The debt has been reduced from over 3 billion to around 1 billion euros, with 1.05 billion euros now available for creditors. Employees received 500 million euros in severance, and suppliers have been partially reimbursed. Van Buggenhout believes his approach has been beneficial for creditors, despite the lengthy process.
