New Zealand elections show a tight race between the ruling party and Labour.
In the New Zealand parliamentary elections, the National Party leads with 29.45% of the votes, closely followed by the Labour Party at 29.25%. Official results will be announced on November 27. Labour MP Kieran McAnulty noted that the National Party is performing better than expected, but cautioned against drawing conclusions due to the low number of votes counted so far. Left-wing parties aim to prevent the National-led coalition from retaining power, which would mark the first time in nearly fifty years that a government ends after one term. New Zealand adopted a mixed-member proportional voting system in 1996, allowing voters to choose both a party and a local candidate. The National Party has been in power since the 2023 elections, led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon since 2021.
