Opposition calls on Parliament to remove the President
Opposition deputies in Paraguay have initiated impeachment proceedings against President Santiago Peña following a banking crisis. The request, supported by 35 signatures, was submitted to the Chamber of Deputies. A special session is scheduled to discuss the matter. For the impeachment to proceed, 53 out of 80 deputies must approve it, despite Peña's party holding a majority. The crisis began when the Central Bank took control of Ueno Bank, affecting millions of depositors. Peña, linked to Ueno, assured citizens of the financial system's stability. The impeachment request also targets Vice President Pedro Alliana, whom Peña endorsed for the presidency in 2028.
