Peruvian customs intercepts 3,000 tarantulas hidden in socks on their way to Germany
Peruvian customs intercepted around 3,000 tarantulas hidden in socks in the luggage of two Germans and one Pole at Lima airport. They were arrested on suspicion of illegal wildlife trafficking while attempting to travel to Germany. The spiders were discovered during a routine check, with some specimens possibly not yet scientifically described. The suspects are believed to have intentionally collected various species, and one is reportedly a tarantula research specialist. The seized spiders will be identified and housed in a recognized breeding and rescue center. The illegal wildlife trade is estimated to generate around 18 billion euros annually, contributing to biodiversity loss.
