Ghent police catches 4 cyclists per day using smartphones during special control month

During a special control month, Ghent police caught four cyclists daily using their smartphones while riding. The fine for this offense is 174 euros, the same as for motorists. In total, 124 individuals were penalized for phone use while cycling or on e-scooters. Additionally, there were 101 violations in pedestrian zones, where cyclists must ride slowly or dismount in crowded areas. The police also cited 69 e-scooter riders for not wearing helmets, which is now mandatory, and 31 cyclists for riding on sidewalks, allowed only for children under 10. The police emphasized that the initiative aimed to enhance traffic safety rather than create a witch hunt.
