The Polish research station needs to expand. Climate change is to blame.
The Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute of Geophysics is modernizing the Hornsund Polar Station to enhance its research capabilities and address climate change impacts. The project includes building a self-sufficient energy facility with laboratories and storage, replacing an old structure threatened by coastal erosion. The station, operational year-round since 1978, faces significant shoreline retreat due to climate change, prompting the relocation of fuel storage. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind will be utilized to reduce reliance on diesel. The modernization is part of a broader initiative, including a European Commission-funded project on hydrogen energy storage, with completion expected by 2030, coinciding with the 5th International Polar Year.
