The population that needs healthcare the most is the least supported

A recent study reveals that nearly half of respondents in Portugal belong to a vulnerable health profile, facing significant challenges in accessing continuous healthcare despite high needs. The research, conducted by the Ordem dos Médicos, identified three distinct population profiles: Vulnerable, Episodic, and Integrated. The Vulnerable group, comprising 48% of participants, reports poorer health perceptions and greater disease burden, often struggling to maintain healthcare continuity. In contrast, 18% are classified as Integrated, enjoying better access and preventive practices. The study also highlights contrasting experiences in accessing healthcare services, with many finding it difficult to obtain timely care, particularly within the public system. Recommendations include tailoring health policies to social realities and addressing public perceptions of healthcare access.
