Portugal maintains a top position among world leaders in the energy transition

Portugal ranks 4th in the Allianz Green Transition Tracker 2026, showing progress in energy transition despite a drop in position. The country improved its score to 48.7 points, but this is below global and EU averages. Greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 21.6% since 2015, and electric vehicles made up 38% of new car sales in 2025. However, the share of low-carbon electricity in total production fell from 85.2% to 80.9%. The report highlights that while many economies are making progress in decarbonization, the pace is insufficient to meet international climate goals. Europe leads the ranking, but emission reductions have slowed significantly, with the EU projected to reach carbon neutrality by 2057. Globally, carbon neutrality is expected by 2064, 14 years later than the 2050 target.
