Portuguese value "One Health", but there are still gaps

A majority of Portuguese people recognize the importance of the connection between human, animal, and environmental health, but there are gaps in knowledge regarding antibiotics and food safety. A study by the Ordem dos Médicos found that 83.9% of respondents believe in the need for cooperation among health professionals to prevent public health threats. However, concerning behaviors were noted, with 12% admitting to taking antibiotics without a prescription, and a significant portion unaware of the implications of antibiotic use in animal production. Additionally, about 20% of meat consumers do not know the sanitary conditions of the animals they consume. The study emphasizes the need for improved public health literacy and integration of health concepts.
