Portuguese people value "One Health" but there is still a long way to go
A majority of Portuguese people recognize the importance of integrating human, animal, and environmental health, but there are significant knowledge gaps regarding antibiotics and food safety. A study revealed that 83.9% of respondents believe in the necessity of cooperation among various health professionals to prevent public health threats. However, concerning behaviors were noted, such as 12% admitting to taking antibiotics without a prescription. Additionally, many are unaware of the implications of antibiotic use in animal production. The findings indicate a need for improved public understanding of health integration and its impact on food production and choices. The study emphasizes that health discussions should encompass environmental quality and dietary behaviors, not just access to medical care.
