Intermediate supervision: the strategy of training in fits and starts

The ongoing issue of police leadership shortages in Portugal is exacerbated by an aging workforce and insufficient training programs. Despite recent increases in training slots for police chiefs, the effects will not be felt until 2028, while the need is immediate. The number of police chiefs is declining, with many approaching retirement age, leading to a critical gap in supervision and operational management. The current strategy of reactive training fails to address the long-term needs of the police force. A consistent and proactive approach to training and promotion is essential to ensure effective leadership and operational efficiency within the PSP.
