A ghost species has been identified in Hungary

The identification of the ornate mosaic moth (Euchromius superbellus) in Hungary marks a significant entomological discovery, as its presence has been unverified for nearly a century. Previously referred to as a 'ghost species', claims of sightings were made in the 19th and 20th centuries but lacked validation. This summer, Balázs Tóth from the Natural History Museum captured a specimen in the Hosszúcsemő Peat Bog. Morphological similarities to related species necessitated microscopic genital examination for accurate identification. The moth is typically associated with dry habitats in the Mediterranean and Central Asian regions, with its recent discovery in Hungary indicating sporadic occurrences. Experts suggest it may have migrated from the Balkans, with dry years potentially facilitating its spread, although its ecological needs remain largely unknown.
