Shocking discovery. A Pole and two Germans arrested at the airport in Peru
SERFOR announced the detention of foreigners at Lima airport attempting to smuggle various spider species, including some not yet scientifically described. The spiders were hidden in luggage, including socks, and came from different regions of Peru. Among them was the endangered Pamphobeteus Antinous, which is legally protected in Peru. One detainee may be a well-known tarantula researcher, and the spiders were likely intended for collection, research, or as pets. Authorities acted on an anonymous tip, and those involved face significant prison sentences for illegal wildlife trafficking. The spiders will be sent to an authorized breeding facility after examination.
