Dozens of golden hearts for war children stolen from path in Utrecht
The heart path in Utrecht's Wilhelminapark, a war memorial with 150 golden hearts for rescued children, has been significantly reduced due to thefts. Over sixty hearts have been stolen recently, according to the initiator. Each heart represents a child saved during World War II by resistance figures Trui van Lier and Jet Berdenis van Berlekom. The theft has deeply affected Michèle van Lier, a relative of Trui, who finds it sad that such a beautiful monument cannot be preserved. Despite the hearts having little monetary value, the emotional significance is profound. Discussions with the municipality about replacing the stolen hearts are ongoing, but the future of the memorial remains uncertain.
