A secret message was sent from Buda to Pest and back, no one could intercept it

Researchers from HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre and ELTE tested quantum key distribution (QKD) over a public radio messaging network, successfully encrypting messages. They believe this is the first application of QKD for securing messages transmitted via the Meshtastic network. Meshtastic allows for short text messages to be sent without installed infrastructure, using low-power LoRa radio modulation. The experiment demonstrated that quantum keys can be effectively used in widely accessible radio systems, showcasing the integration of quantum communication with existing technologies. The researchers exchanged encrypted messages while moving across Budapest, confirming the feasibility of their approach.
