House of Representatives wants to retrain laid-off education officials as teachers

A majority in the Dutch Parliament supports a plan for laid-off civil servants from the Ministry of Education to be voluntarily retrained as teachers. The VVD party will request the government to develop this plan in response to the announcement of cutting 25,000 civil service jobs over the next nine years. The initiative is backed by coalition partners D66 and CDA, as well as opposition parties JA21 and 50Plus. The VVD believes this could address both the job cuts and the teacher shortage, as many civil servants have a passion for education. However, previous attempts to transition civil servants into teaching roles faced challenges, including concerns about salary reductions and lack of pedagogical experience. The details of the job cuts and retraining plan will be clarified in 2027, with a budget of over 400 million euros allocated to tackle the teacher shortage.
