From 20 to 19 degrees: the city of Ghent saves by lowering heating in offices and schools by one degree
The city of Ghent has lowered the heating temperature in municipal buildings to 19 degrees Celsius to reduce heating costs amid rising energy prices. This measure is expected to save at least €197,000. The heating season has also been shortened by one month, starting two weeks later in September and ending two weeks earlier in May. However, vulnerable facilities like care homes and daycare centers will not see a temperature reduction. Employees are encouraged to keep windows closed and wear extra layers, while the use of electric heaters is prohibited. This is not the first time Ghent has implemented such measures, having done so during the 2022 energy crisis.
