The EU may backtrack, and we don't have to say goodbye to gasoline cars
The European Parliament's environmental committee has voted to ease the 2035 emissions targets for cars, allowing internal combustion engine vehicles to remain on the market. The current rules require a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2035, but the committee proposes to lower this to 87.5%. Manufacturers could offset 7.5% of emissions through credits for low-carbon steel, leading to a total reduction of 95%. For light commercial vehicles, the target would drop from 100% to 80%, and the 2030 target would be set at 35%. The proposal also favors small electric cars produced in the EU, counting them as 1.4 vehicles for emissions calculations. However, this decision is not final and will require further approval from the European Parliament and member states.
