Volunteers excavate hidden German war bunkers under school parking lot in Geraardsbergen
Volunteers in Geraardsbergen have started excavating underground tunnels from World War II located beneath the parking lot of the GO! Centrum school. The tunnels, originally built by German soldiers, were filled with earth and debris after the war. The Wings of Memory association aims to clear the entrances and restore the tunnel system with the help of 30 volunteers. The excavation is challenging, with one bunker filled with rubble and another with waste. The project has received a €25,000 subsidy to support the initial phase, which focuses on clearing access and securing the entrances. The ultimate goal is to make the tunnels accessible again, preserving a piece of local wartime history.
