Victory for European car manufacturers, MEPs supported milder emission targets

Members of the European Parliament's ENVI committee supported a reduction in CO2 emission targets for new cars and vans. By 2035, manufacturers would need to cut emissions by 87.5% for cars and 80% for vans compared to 2021 levels. This adjustment allows for the continued sale of some combustion engine vehicles. The proposal includes compensating emissions through credits for low-carbon steel produced in the EU. The revised targets are part of a broader automotive package introduced by the European Commission last December. The ENVI committee's proposal will be voted on in December during a plenary session in Strasbourg, aiming for a compromise agreement with EU member states.
