WHO approves use of two new Ebola vaccines in hard-hit Congo

Oxford University, in collaboration with the Serum Institute of India, developed the ChAdOx1 vaccine, while Moderna introduced the mRNA-1469 vaccine. A trial is ongoing for Ervebo, an existing Ebola vaccine, to assess its effectiveness against the bundibugyo variant, for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists. The African CDC reports over 5,000 deaths from the current outbreak, primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with more than 10,000 infections. Initial results from the vaccine trial are anticipated in early 2027.
